Herman Miller Embody resale value — what your used Embody is actually worth in 2026

The short answer

A Grade A Herman Miller Embody is worth £200 per chair on collection — that is £20 more than a Classic Aeron. The reason is simple supply and demand: fewer Embodies were sold into UK offices than Aerons, the new price is higher (£1,500–£1,750 RRP), and the chair has a loyal following among people who want the health-positive seating without paying retail.

Grade B Embodies (light wear, all functions working, cosmetic issues only) sit around £140–£160. Grade C — significant fabric wear, a flattened pixel matrix, or a non-functional tilt — still holds £60–£90 if the frame and mechanism are recoverable. We buy all three grades.

Why the Embody is worth more than an Aeron

It surprises people, because the Aeron is the icon. But three things push the Embody buyback above the Classic Aeron. First, scarcity: Herman Miller sold far more Aerons into UK corporates, so the second-hand Embody supply is thinner and prices hold firmer. Second, the new price is higher — a new Embody is £1,500–£1,750, so a refurbished one at £550–£650 is an easy sell. Third, the buyer profile: Embody buyers tend to be deliberate — they want this specific chair for posture and movement reasons, not just any premium task chair.

Note this only holds against the Classic Aeron (£180). The Aeron Remastered (£250) still outranks the Embody. But if you have a mixed estate, do not assume your Aerons are your most valuable chairs — the Embodies in the corner may be worth more each.

How we grade Embodies

Grade A — looks near-new. Backrest pixels intact and springy, fabric (Rhythm or Balance textile) un-pilled and unstained, all four arm adjustments work, BackFit and tilt-tension dials turn smoothly, base un-scuffed, castors rolling. Most Embodies under 5 years old land here.

Grade B — light wear. Some fabric pilling or a faded patch, an arm pad scuff, or a slightly stiff tilt. Fully functional, sellable after a light refurb and a textile clean.

Grade C — visible wear or a broken component. Torn back fabric, a flattened or split pixel matrix, seized tilt, or a dead gas lift. We strip the worst of these for parts (which keeps other Embodies on the road) and pay accordingly.

What affects the price (in order of impact)

1. Tilt and BackFit mechanism — the Embody’s whole pitch is dynamic support. If the tilt-tension dial or the BackFit lumbar slider does not work, you drop a grade fast.

2. Backrest pixel condition — the matrix of pixels behind the fabric should still flex evenly. A flattened or split section is visible and costs you.

3. Fabric condition and colour — pilling, staining and tears matter more than on a mesh Aeron because the Embody is fully upholstered. Black, graphite and dark blue resell fastest; bright or unusual colours sit a little longer.

4. Arms — the Embody’s arms are a known wear point. Four-way adjustment should hold position; loose or sagging arms drop you to Grade B.

5. Base and castors — scuffs are cosmetic and minor; a cracked base is structural and matters.

Which Embody fabrics and colours resell best

Black and graphite Rhythm fabric is the fastest-moving combination — it suits any home office and hides minor wear. Balance (the slightly more textured, premium textile) in a neutral tone also moves well. Where we see chairs sit longer: vivid colours (the brighter blues, greens and reds Herman Miller offered), and any heavily marked light-grey fabric, which shows every coffee ring.

Colour does not change our headline buyback rate — a Grade A Embody is £200 whatever the colour. It only affects how long the chair takes us to resell, and we absorb that timing risk. So do not discount your brightly-coloured Embodies; bring them in with the rest.

Is it worth cleaning or refurbing before you sell?

A light vacuum and a wipe-down does no harm and can nudge a borderline chair from Grade B to Grade A. But do not spend money on professional upholstery cleaning, replacement arm pads, or a new pixel matrix before selling to us — the cost of doing it piecemeal at retail prices is more than the grade uplift you would earn. Our buyback rate already prices in expected refurb. Send the chairs as they are.
