Aeron vs Aeron Remastered — what changed in 2017, and what each generation is worth

Herman Miller redesigned the Aeron in 2017 — same silhouette, materially different chair. Here's what changed, and how to identify which one you're holding.

The headline differences

The Aeron Remastered (2017+) is structurally the same as the Classic (1994–2017) but with three meaningful upgrades: 8Z (eight-zone) pellicle mesh tuned to body pressure, tilt limiter as standard (was optional), and PostureFit SL as standard (was optional). It also has a refined Y-tower geometry and updated graphite/onyx colour options.

The Classic Aeron is still excellent — it was the benchmark for 23 years and remains a perfectly capable chair. But the Remastered is meaningfully more comfortable for long sessions and has a tighter, more refined feel.

How to tell which one you have

Easy giveaway: the tilt mechanism cover. The Remastered has a smooth, tapered cover under the seat. The Classic has a more boxy, utilitarian one. If you flip the chair over and look at the Y-tower, the Remastered's is sleeker; the Classic's is chunkier.

Pellicle: the Remastered's 8Z pellicle has visibly varied weave density across the back — denser at the lumbar, looser at the shoulders. The Classic has uniform pellicle.

Sticker on the underside: Herman Miller usually labels the year. Anything 2017 or later under the seat is a Remastered.

Used buyback values

Aeron Classic: £180 per chair Grade A.

Aeron Remastered: £250 per chair Grade A.

The £70 gap reflects two things: stronger secondary demand for Remastered, and a higher new retail price (£1,400 vs the discontinued Classic's £900-ish at end of life). Buyers comparing options pick the Remastered if both are available — so we resell Remastered faster and at higher margin.

Which should you keep?

If you're choosing which chairs to keep from a mixed estate — keep the Remastered for any seats that'll be used heavily. The 8Z pellicle and standard tilt limiter make a real difference over 8 hours. Sell the Classics back to us, take the £180 each, and put the cash toward whatever's next.
